Complying with the Tennessee Open Records laws is important for maintaining transparency in government.  Understanding how the Open Records law impacts your organization can protect you from litigation and help to build public trust.  This session will cover the Tennessee Open Records law and talk in depth how those laws apply to social media accounts that your organization may have.  Determining if your police department, parks & recreation department, fire department, or even elected officials have a social media account that falls under the Open Records Act is an important first step to compliance with the law.  It is also important to consider carefully if your organization should have an active presence on social media and who within your organization is authorized to post updates.  Preservation of social media records, including comments from the public should be incorporated into your social media policy.
